SANDRA DRATLER
Sandra Dratler, DrPH is a director of the joint MBA/MPH healthcare management program at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health and Haas School of Business. She holds an appointment as senior researcher at the Institute for Global Health at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Dratler has extensive experience having served 25 years as a senior healthcare manager in health systems in the Minneapolis and San Francisco markets. Over the past ten years, Dr. Dratler’s efforts have been focused on capacity building in developing countries with an emphasis on management development. She has conducted management training in Egypt, India, Thailand and China. Most recently, Dr. Dratler has taught courses in healthcare management in the Executive MBA program at Lingnan University (Guangzhou, China).

Dr. Dratler received her Master in Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota and her DrPH from the University of California School of Public Health (1999). She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Denver.


GEORGE BAEDER

George Baeder is a Vice President of Monitor Group, based in the firm’s Shanghai office.  George has spent the majority his professional career in Asia, assisting major international firms to establish and expand their Asian businesses profitably and to meet the global competitive challenges originating in the region. 

During his three decades living in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, George has focused on the region’s emerging markets.  He has worked across a broad spectrum of industries – including fast moving consumer products, pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, oil and gas, natural resources, telecommunications, IT, consumer electronics and financial services.  He has also worked in the private equity arena on behalf of both financial investors and clients seeking funds.

After studying economics and Chinese history in the US and Taiwan, he joined Business International Corp, a New York based business advisory firm in 1973.  In 1976 he moved to Hong Kong to build the company’s Asian operations.  As Vice President and Regional General Manager of Business International Corporation and a member of the parent company’s board of directors, he led the company’s fastest growing business and its largest contributor to corporate profits.

From 1986-97, he founded and led the Pacific Rim Consulting Group, Asia’s leading independent strategy consulting firm, with offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei Beijing and Shanghai and New York. 

During the past 10 years, much of George’s work has focused on the analysis of key strategic issues in Asian that shape investment decisions and competitive success, and particularly on China’s emergence as a driving force in global industries.  This theme permeates his work with multinational clients at Monitor Group, his support of Private Equity investors in Asia and his role as a Director of Research-Works, the Asian region’s leading independent equities research firm.


BENJAMIN Q. AVANCENA
Benjamin Q. Avancena is International Vice President for the Johnson & Johnson Medical Device & Diagnostics companies in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea.  He is a member of the Johnson & Johnson Medical Regional Leadership Team and chairman of the Lifescan Diabetes Management Franchise for Asia Pacific. Mr. Avancena currently chairs the Johnson & Johnson Asia Pacific Contributions Committee and co-chairs the Strategic Partnership Program between Johnson &Johnson and the Chinese Ministry of Health. He is also chairman of the Healthcare Committee of the Shanghai American Chamber of Commerce and a board member of Junior Achievement China, a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and inspiring the youth.

Mr. Avancena joined Johnson & Johnson in 1986, and held positions of increasing responsibilities. He was made Managing Director of Asean and Pakistan in 2000 where he successfully steered the companies to consistent profitable growth. Prior to his current appointment, he was Area Manager International, Greater China with responsibilities for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Mr. Avancena earned a Bachelor’s degree from Lewis & Clark College, USA, and an MBA from Thunderbird, the Garvin School of International Management, Arizona, USA.

Mr. Avancena is a native of the Philippines.  Together with his wife and son, they now reside in Shanghai, PRC.


PATRICIA TURNEY
Patricia Turney joined Amgen Inc. in 1996 as a Supervisor in Operations and has grown her role to enable Amgen's global expansion & development. In 1998, she managed Capital Construction Funding and, in 2000, was selected by the VP of Operations to be his Chief of Staff for two years. Patricia then created the Corporate Engineering group supporting Amgen’s rapid site expansion. In conjunction with industry peers & the FDA she developed a Baseline Guide for Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Facilities used worldwide.  Now a Director in R&D Strategic Operations, Patricia is responsible for pipeline planning and strategy, international expansion, and business process improvements.  Prior to Amgen, Patricia owned and operated an aircraft charter company.  She also served in the U.S. military as a Naval Aviator for 6 years.  Patricia received a B.S. in Mathematics, minor in Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a Masters in Business Administration from UCLA.
