Asia at a Crossroads - From Outsourcing to Technology Investment and Innovation

Today Asia is the rising star of the world economy. For decades, two economic giants – China and India – have outpaced growth in developed countries. The technology panel will include experts that have actively participated in this story. Asia now stands at the crossroads of establishing itself as a technology leader and immunizing itself from external threats.

The panel will explore the following questions:

  • How does and will Asia identify itself as technology leader?
  • What will the role of Asian technology firms be in the future?
  • What sector will the next success story emerge from and what are the drivers that will enable it?
  • How can Asia sustain its technological leadership and be resilient?

Panelists

Duane Kuang, Founder and Managing Director, Qiming Venture Partners

Duane is a founding partner of Qiming Venture Partners. Duane has close to 20 years of IT industry operational and investment experience. Prior to founding Qiming, Duane was the Director of Intel Capital China. During his 6 year tenure at Intel Capital, Duane was in charge of all of Intel Capital's investment activities in China. Prior to Intel Capital, Duane spent over 5 years at Cisco Systems in China, holding various senior management positions in the sales and marketing organizations. Duane was instrumental in building up Cisco's presence in Southern China and later in the telecom and service provider sector. Before returning to in 1994, Duane had a successful engineering and management career in both startup and large global companies in Silicon Valley . Duane started his career in 1988 as a software engineer at 3Com Corporation, and 3 years later joined Kalpana Inc, a Silicon Valley startup company later acquired by Cisco as an engineering manager. Duane was born in China and educated in America. He holds an MBA degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a Master's degree in Computer Science from Stanford University . Duane currently serves on the board of ChinaCache, Fangtek and 2DuNet.

 

Andy Marken, President, Marken Communications

In his more than 25 years in marketing and communications, Andy has been involved with a broad range of corporate and marketing activities. His experience includes strategic and market planning and execution for more than 10 years with communications and Internet firms including AT&T and CERFnet as well as more than 15 years in storage, storage management and video solutions with firms including Philips, InterVideo, Ulead, Corel, Cyberlink, Matsushita, Pinnacle, Dazzle, ADS Tech, FAST, Verbatim, Mitsubishi and Panasonic. Andy also developed and coordinated a wide variety of management, marketing and promotional efforts for firms including Atari, Amdahl and Control Data. A graduate of Iowa State University, Andy received his Bachelor's Degree with majors in Radio & Television and Journalism and an MBA. Andy is widely published in the industry and trade press.

 

 

Rob Enderle,Principal Analyst, Enderle Group

Rob is President and Principal Analyst of the Enderle Group, a forward looking emerging technology advisory firm. Recognized as one of the best general Inquiry Analysts in the world, Rob specializes in providing rapid perspectives and suggested tactics and strategies to a large number of clients dealing with rapidly changing global events. Rob lives emerging technology and has a passion for personal technology and market strategy.

In addition Rob writes for TechNewsWorld, DarkReading, Digital Trends, TGDaily, ITBusiness Edge and Datamation. Rob appears regularly on WSJ Radio, CNBC, NPR, and Bloomberg Radio/TV.

Before founding the Enderle Group Rob was the Senior Research Fellow for Forrester Research and the Giga Information Group. While there he ran the eCommerce, Security, and Mobile research practices. Before Giga, Rob was with Dataquest covering client/server software where he became one of the most widely publicized technology analysts in the world. Before Dataquest Rob worked for IBM as was in IBM’s executive resource program. As part of that program he managed projects and people in Finance, Internal Audit, Competitive Analysis, Marketing, Security, and Planning. Prior to IBM he was a Marketing Director and sat on the board of the Southern California Marketing Director’s Association.

Rob holds an AA in Merchandising, a BS in Business, and an MBA. Rob sits on the advisory councils for Lenovo, Toshiba, AMD, HP, Dell, Philips, Trusted Computing Group, and the Lifeboat Foundation.

 

Jeff Hastings, President and General Manager, Digital Media, Corel

Jeff Hastings has served as Corel's President and General Manager, Digital Media since August 2007 and is responsible for developing and implementing all aspects of the Company's digital media strategy. Prior to joining Corel, Mr. Hastings served as general manager at Pinnacle Systems, the consumer division of Avid, where he was responsible for all aspects of the company's global operations. Prior to joining Pinnacle, Mr. Hastings was COO of M-Audio, another Avid company. Mr. Hastings was responsible for taking M-Audio's highly regarded tools for computer-centric musicians and professionals and expanding their reach into the consumer market.

Prior to this, Mr. Hastings served as president of Rio, the company that pioneered the MP3 space by introducing the industry's first MP3 player. Mr. Hastings holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Purdue University and holds eight US patents.

 

Moderator

David Riemer, Executive in Residence at UC Berkeley and former VP Marketing at Yahoo!

David Riemer is one of the leading marketers in the Internet industry. He spent the last decade developing and bringing great products to web users worldwide. Following his career as an ad agency President, David brought his strategic and marketing leadership to two start-ups and an internet titan, Yahoo!. In various roles over six years at Yahoo!, David led the marketing teams on both the BtoB and Consumer sides of the business where he managed marketing for virtually all of Yahoo!’s products across their customer base of 500M users. David is now advising emerging Internet and consumer technology companies. He specializes in helping businesses clarify their product strategy, go-to-market approach and business model. David also serves as Executive-in-Residence at Haas Business School (Berkeley). David earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University, and an MBA from Columbia University. He lives in Berkeley, California with his wife and two (very web savvy) teenage children who help keep him honest.
