Scott Matlock, Chairman of Asia Mergers and Acquisitions, Morgan Stanley

 

Scott Matlock is a Managing Director of Morgan Stanley & Co. and Chairman of Asia M&A. Mr. Matlock joined Morgan Stanley in 1988 in the Corporate Finance Department. Prior to his current role, Mr. Matlock was most recently the Global Head of Media & Communications Mergers & Acquisitions based in London.

He has distinguished himself as one of Morgan Stanley’s most prolific M&A practitioners, focusing on the media and telecommunications sectors. Scott has played a leading role advising some of Morgan Stanley's most important clients including BSkyB, Liberty Global, SES Global and a number of financial sponsors as they have transformed the EMEA cable, broadband, wireless and satellite sectors. As a senior banker in this pan-regional role, he works with clients globally to provide Asia focused transaction ideas and world-class execution advice.

Mr. Matlock received his Bachelor degree in 1988 from the University of California at Berkeley.

Joi Ito, CEO, Creative Commons and Co-founder / Board Member, Digital Garage

 

Jōichi Itō or Joichi Ito (伊藤穰一 Itō Jōichi, born June 19, 1966), more commonly known as Joi Ito, is a Japanese activist, entrepreneur, and venture capitalist.

Joi was the CEO of the first commercial ISP in Japan, PSINet Japan, which was later sold to Cable and Wireless. He went on to set up Infoseek Japan, which was acquired by Disney and then Rakuten. He also co-founded one of the first web companies in Japan, Digital Garage, which is now a public company trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (t.4819). Joi has worked closely with government, academia and standards organisations to promote the Internet and innovation. Previously a board member of the Open Source Initiative, ICANN and a variety of other non-profits, he currently holds positions at Keio University and is CEO of Creative Commons and board member of the Mozilla Foundation.

Joi also set up Neoteny, an incubator in Japan which had worked with Singapore’s Kent Ridge Digital Labs, and was the first investor in Six Apart, the largest independent blog software company. As an angel investor, he was an early investor in Flickr, Last.fm, Kongregate, Twitter and other firms.

Lim Siong Guan, Group President, Government of Singapore Investment Corporation

 

Mr Lim Siong Guan is the Group President of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC). He joined GIC in September 2007. Mr Lim was the Chairman of the Economic Development Board from October 2006 to June 2009. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore (since March 2005), instructing on leadership and change management in the public sector, and a Senior Fellow of the Civil Service College.

Mr Lim was the Head of the Singapore Civil Service from September 1999 to March 2005. He was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence from July 1981 to May 1994, Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office from June 1994 to July 1998, (concurrently) Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education from April 1997 to June 1999, and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance (June 1999 to September 2006). He was the first Principal Private Secretary to former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew from May 1978 to June 1981.

Mr Lim was the Chairman of the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (2004 to 2006), the Chairman of the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (2004 to 2006), the Chairman of the Central Provident Fund Board (1986 to 1994) and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Currency (now merged into the Monetary Authority of Singapore)(1999 to 2002). He was a Board Member of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (1999-2006), a Member of the Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship (2005 to 2006), a Board Member of the Institute of Policy Studies (1999 to 2005), and a Board Member of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (1997 to 1999). He has been a Director of Temasek Holdings Pte. Ltd., a Director of DBS Bank Ltd, a Director of Neptune Orient Lines Ltd, and variously Chairman or Director of a number of companies which are now part of the Singapore Technologies Engineering group of companies.

Arun Sarin, Senior Advisor, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and former CEO, Vodafone

 

Arun Sarin is a Senior Advisor to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. ("KKR"). Mr. Sarin is the former Chief Executive Officer of mobile telecommunications leader Vodafone Group Plc, and had previously been a Senior Advisor to KKR. Mr. Sarin’s career began in 1984 at Pacific Telesis Group (PTG), where he pioneered the expansion of the mobile communications industry by acquiring numerous domestic and international cellular licenses. He held several senior roles at PTG over the next decade. In 1994, he led the review and recommendation for the spinoff of the wireless businesses from PTG, which became AirTouch Communications. Subsequently, he was appointed President and COO of AirTouch in 1997.

With the 1999 merger of Vodafone and AirTouch, Mr. Sarin became CEO of Vodafone’s US/Asia Pacific region. He left Vodafone in 2000 and rejoined as Chief Executive in 2003. The Group’s M&A focus was originally based on opportunities in developed markets, but this shifted to incorporate emerging markets in 2006. Mr. Sarin subsequently led the company’s re-entry into the Indian market in 2007, and also acquired several other mobile operators in high growth markets such as Turkey, Ghana, Romania, Czech Republic and Qatar. In his five years as CEO, Vodafone returned capital of approximately £34 billion to shareholders including dividends and buy backs. He retired from Vodafone in 2008.

Mr. Sarin has an MS in Engineering and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his BS in Engineering from IIT, the Indian Institute of Technology. He is a member of the boards of directors of Cisco Systems, Inc. and Safeway Inc. He has served on numerous boards in the past, including Gap Inc. and Charles Schwab Corp., and as a non-executive director of the Court of the Bank of England.
